University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has been named one of the Top 20 Coolest Schools of 2019 by Sierra Magazine, the national magazine of the Sierra Club, which celebrates environmentally friendly colleges across the country.
Sierra Magazine praised a variety of eco-conscious student groups at UIUC, who play a large part in lessening the campus’s environmental footprint.
Members of Illini Lights Out gather every Friday night to turn off lights in classrooms and study spaces across campus. The Sustainable Student Farm, an offshoot of the Crop Sciences Department, aims to educate other students about responsible food production practices and provide locally and sustainably grown produce to the Urbana community.
Faculty gets involved too: the Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment at UIUC has launched a number of “Certified Green” programs that encourage staff offices, research labs and even fraternities to minimize waste and improve energy efficiency.
UIUC is leading the charge toward a greener Illinois. Read more about Sierra Magazine’s ranking system and check out more eco-friendly schools here.
