How long have you been an artist or when did you start?

I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. For over 20 years I’ve done art and design-related work professionally. I started as a graphic designer. As I gained experience, I transitioned to a full-time freelance illustrator and mosaic artist.

Was there a single incident or moment when you realized this was your passion and if so, would you tell us about it?

I can’t recall a single moment when I realized art was my passion. I have always been inspired by artists, architects, woodworkers, and craftspeople of all types.

What opportunities does Illinois present to local Illinois artists?

There are many great artistic opportunities in Illinois that I have been involved with. Peoria participates in ArtPop, a group that promotes local artists’ work and makes art accessible through available media space. As the winner of the People’s Choice Award in 2016, I was awarded billboard space featuring my art for a year. This valuable exposure led to other opportunities including local barn quilt project and a community grant supporting my work. Additionally, local Museums including The Peoria Riverfront Museum, Galesburg Civic Art Center and the City Museum in St. Louis represent my work.

What is your favorite medium to work in?

I use polymer clay because it is a very versatile medium. I can make it look like wood, turquoise, coral, shell, bone, metal and more all in a single piece. This contrast of materials is what makes my style distinctive.

What artist inspires you and why?

I’m inspired by one of my favorite artists, the late Charley Harper. I love how his simple geometric illustrations perfectly capture the essence of his subjects.

What do you like about Illinois?

I like the ever-changing weather, the natural beauty and wildlife, the convenience of living in a mid-sized town while also being close to larger cities

What does being able to live and work in Illinois mean to you?

Living in Illinois means I can be close to family and friends. My kids can attend a top public school (Dunlap HS).  I appreciate all that Peoria has to offer to the art community such as First Fridays, The Peoria Art Guild’s Fine Art Fair, IGNITE Peoria, The Riverfront Market and so much more.
