Illinois city named safest for women in America

According to one study, Naperville is the safest city for women in the United States. A data analysis company compared crime statistics for 285 cities with at least 100,000 residents, and Naperville came out number one.

"We are very pleased and proud of the No. 1 rating. Our community outreach efforts and preventative programs specially designed to ensure women's safety are just some of our keys to success," said Naperville police Chief Robert Marshall in a Daily Herald article.

How Texas and Indiana rely on Illinois union workers’ wages

A new academic study of state economies suggests there’s a hidden deduction lurking in Illinois union workers’ paychecks. Turns out anti-union states like Texas and Indiana overly rely on the federal taxes paid by union workers in other states to prop up their economies.

While workers in right-to-work states account for just 37.4 percent of all federal income tax revenues, they receive 41.9 percent of all non-health, non-retirement government assistance, the paper says.

Chicago Selected to Host 2015 NFL Draft

After football season comes to a close, Illinois fans will have another NFL event to look forward to.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have announced that Chicago was chosen to host the 2015 NFL draft. The draft had been held in the Radio City Music Hall in New York since 1965, but earlier this year, the league decided to award the draft to a new city. Los Angeles and Nashville were among some of the other candidate cities, but Chicago’s rich history with the NFL helped it become the front runner.

Tallest cow, sure; but Illinois dairy also an $8 billion industry

You may have seen recent news that Illinois is home to the tallest cow in the US. At 6'4", Blosom surpassed the average 5' height for Holsteins. She never had a calf, so she never produced milk and resides as a happy family pet.

What you may not know is that dairying in Illinois includes 1,117 dairy farmers and 90 processing plants, whose industry generates $8 billion a year for the Illinois economy and 11,600 Illinois jobs.
