Board members of the World Wildlife Fund named Evanston to lead the United States in observance of Earth Hour, an annual celebration of sustainability efforts.
On March 28, Evanston will join other so-named "City Capitals" around the world – cities designated by the WWF to lead their countries in encouraging businesses and residents to turn off their lights for an hour starting at 8:30 p.m. to symbolize a celebration of the Earth and a call to action to fight climate change.
The WWF’s naming of Evanston marks the second year the U.S. capital for the event has been in Illinois. Last year’s U.S. capital for the event was Chicago.
