Did you know? Illinois native LaRoyce Hawkins is best known for his lead role in NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” where he plays Officer Kevin Atwater.
Hawkins is an American actor born and raised in Harvey, Illinois, where he attended Thornton High School and first endeavored into acting and stand-up comedy. During high school, he was a member of the speech team, where he became a two-time state champion. In 2005, he captured the state title in the Illinois High School Association’s Original Comedy event.
Upon his graduation, he attended Illinois State University where he majored in acting. During his time at ISU, he was cast in his first major motion picture, which led him to take a break from school to pursue this opportunity to play Art Baker in the film “The Express: The Ernie Davis Story.” He later returned to ISU and completed his degree in 2012.
Inspired by setting a positive example for his son and empowered to give back to his community, Hawkins started the Be Powerful Initiative, which has allowed him to speak with local officials and stakeholders to help improve and beautify his hometown of Harvey.
Through his initiative, Hawkins has been able to invest in his community with art and innovation through murals and cleanup efforts. Additionally, he regularly gives back by being a Celebrity Kettle Ambassador for the Salvation Army, which has connected more Illinoisans to the resources and support they can offer.
