You may have heard of Southern hospitality, but Illinois has earned recognition in its dedication to inclusiveness. Inclusivity is a quality many Illinoisans pride themselves on, ensuring that all people — regardless of their background or status — feel a sense of belonging. One such school in the Chicago suburb of Burbank was recently nationally recognized for its efforts in fostering inclusion among students.
This particular achievement is a true honor, especially during this time when appreciating and uplifting differences is vital. Luther Burbank Elementary received the Special Olympics Unified Champion National Banner Award for its Unified Robotics team and other inclusive programs.
The Special Olympics Unified Champion National Banner Award recognizes schools that meet 10 national standards of excellence for inclusion, demonstrating a strong commitment to Special Olympics Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole-school engagement to foster a culture of unity and belonging. Achieving this banner signifies a self-sustainable, inclusive school community where students with and without intellectual disabilities work and play together.
As one of only 17 elementary schools nationwide to earn this honor, Burbank continues to break down barriers and create lasting friendships.
The elementary school offers a wide variety of programs intended to include all. The school’s Unified Champion Robotics team is a part of the nationwide program to include students with and without intellectual disabilities coming together to play sports, talk about leadership and to engage their peers in the community. By continuously breaking down barriers, Luther Burbank Elementary sets a perfect example of inclusivity at its best!
After receiving the award, the school now has a new large banner proudly displayed in its lobby and was even awarded $100,000 to donate robotic kits to the students. Congratulations to Luther Burbank Elementary School for serving as a model for Illinoisans — celebrating our uniqueness and diversity and inclusivity at every level of education and beyond.
