Chicago SkylineWhen planning your next road trip, have some peace of mind knowing that Illinois boasts one of the safest commutes in the country.

A report from Beck and Beck, a car accident law firm, analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and determined that Illinois ranked 10th in safest commutes.

The analysis reviewed rush-hour fatal crash data across all 50 states from 2020 – 2024. The report classified rush-hour data as Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The report found that Illinois had an average fatal crash rate of 263.6 per year. Although that is one of the highest in the country, its large population keeps its per-capita risk among the lowest in the nation. Additionally, Illinois accounts for 2.08 fatal crashes per 100,000, below the national average of 3.06.
