According to a recent study by IBM Watson Health, Illinois has one of the highest numbers of top hospitals in the state. Out of the 100 top hospitals in the nation, only Texas and Ohio exceeded Illinois in the number of top-ranking hospitals.
IBM Watson Health’s study analyzed about 2,750 acute care, short-term, non-federal hospitals for the 2018 list. Its study reported that top-performing hospitals realized better risk-adjusted outcomes and maintained both a lower cost to patients and a higher profit margin.
The winning hospitals are categorized into five classes, including major teaching hospitals, teaching hospitals, and large, medium and small community hospitals. The eight Illinois-based winners include winners in three of those categories.
The major teaching hospitals are: Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
The lone teaching hospital is Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
Illinois’ top-ranked large community hospitals include: Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Edward Hospital in Naperville, and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.
NorthShore University HealthSystem is the only hospital in the U.S. to make the list 19 times during the study’s 25-year history.
Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin also received the Everest Award for setting the national standard in its category. According to the report, it is among the fastest improving hospitals on the list. This is the first year the hospital has made the top 100 list.
The study was formerly known as the Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals.
