North American river otters were once common throughout Illinois. This species of otter is the largest member of the weasel family, and they reside in rivers, streams and lakes throughout much of the eastern and northwestern United States. While native to Illinois, their population was greatly reduced after Europeans arrived in the 16th century.
Considered by some to be the best comedian of all time, Robin Williams was born in Chicago in 1951 and went on to make many people laugh. He performed standup comedy and provided his acting talents to many movies.
Sophia Byrd, a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been nominated for two Grammy Awards.
Byrd had the opportunity to sing in a professional oratorio as a college freshman and is now studying lyric theatre. She was one of six vocalists who performed in “Place,” a 2018 work that explores the effects of gentrification in a Brooklyn neighborhood. “Place” is nominated for best chamber music/small ensemble performance and best contemporary classical composition.
Several Illinois hospitals took top rankings in Newsweek’s annual list of the top 200 hospitals in the world. Illinois’ top hospitals in 2021 are Northwestern Memorial Hospital (58), Rush University Medical Center (75), and the University of Chicago Medical Center (101-200).
